10 confirmed dead in shooting at Oregon college

ROSEBURG, OR (NEWS 1130) – Ten people have been confirmed dead and as many as  seven others hurt in a shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.

One survivor of today’s mass shooting says the gunman shot her teacher and asked others in her classroom about their religion before spraying more bullets

Calls to police starting flooding in around 10:45 a.m.

Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said at a news conference that officers exchanged gunfire with the 26-year-old shooter and that “he is deceased.”

Hanlin didn’t say whether the shooter was killed by officers or took his own life.

An emotional Hanlin was clear about how to deal with the gunman’s identity.

“We know who the shooter is, the official ID will come from the medical examiner office. Let me be very clear, I will not name the shooter, I will not give him the credit he probably sought prior to this horrific and cowardly act. Media will get the name confirmed in time, but you will never hear me mention his name. We would encourage media and the community to avoid using it, we encourage you to not repeat it, we encourage you not to glorify and create sensationalism for him. He in no way deserves this.”

Cassandra Welding told CNN her classmate was shot. “One of my fellow classmates went to go see what was going on and she opened the door and unfortunately the gunman shot her and um, and as of right now, I don’t know what her situation is right now, but then we locked the doors and turned off the lights, and we were all pretty much in panic mode.”

CNN says the shooter was armed with four guns, three handguns and an AR-15-style long gun

In a tweet, the local fire district advised people to stay away from the college. Roseburg is about three hours south of Portland.

Umpqua Community College has about 3,000 students. The campus, which appears to be very small and in a rural area, is under lockdown.

This is a very close knit community according to one man who lives there. “Pretty much everybody knows everybody… So, something like this affects many, many people.”

The average age of the students at Umpqua Community College is 38 years old, suggesting it is somewhere people go for later education.

US President Barack Obama is outraged over this latest shooting and at pro-gun advocates who say there’s no need for stricter laws.

“Does anybody really believe that? There are scores of responsible gun owners in this country, they know that’s not true. We know because of the polling that says the majority of Americans understand we should be changing these laws, including the majority of law-abiding gun-owners”

He’s also challenging the media to compare the number of Americans killed by guns to those killed by terrorism.
