Telus to spend $1-billion installing fibre optic Internet in Vancouver

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Telus (TSX:T) has announced a $1-billion infrastructure investment that the company’s executives say will transform the way Vancouver businesses and consumers use the Internet.

The company will install a fibre-optic network across the city over the next five years, resulting in faster downloads, seamless video streaming and the ability to use new technology.

Tony Geheran, president of broadband networks, says the network will provide home Internet speeds of 150 megabits per second, while the average customer currently uses between six and 15 megabits.

Geheran says it takes up to eight minutes to load a high-definition movie for streaming with the current copper infrastructure, but that time will be cut to about six seconds with the new network.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson says he’s thrilled about the investment and believes it will be a big boost for economy, enticing new technology companies and startups to the city.

BC Premier Christy Clark says the fibre-optic network will have a huge impact on small businesses in Vancouver, and shows that Telus has confidence in the province’s economy.
