One zone for buses now in effect

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you ride the bus to work, your commute could be a whole lot cheaper starting today.

There is no need to pay for multiple zones; every bus trip — whether you’re going two blocks or across the region — costs $2.75.

Jennifer Morland with TransLink explains you’ll have to tap in when you board a bus or HandyDart, but won’t have to tap out.

There are still three zones on SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express.

We spoke with one commuter at the Broadway-Commercial transit hub this morning who is among those who will not see savings; he mainly uses SkyTrain.

“It’s a little frustrating, but at least it’s progress and they’re looking at things and trying to make changes,” he tells us.

“I wish it would have been the SkyTrain, as well,” says another commuter. “Sometimes I like to go out to Surrey. To take a bus would probably take an hour and a half to two hours.”

“There will be one fare gate closing at stations along the Expo and Milennium Line. That’s to show customers how it works… and get people familiar to that.”

TransLink will be doing a review of its fare policies and is expected to make an announcement by the end of the year.
