Canucks open the season by beating the Flames

CALGARY, AB (NEWS 1130) – Each member of the Canucks’ top line had a goal as Vancouver opened the regular season with a 5-1 victory over the Calgary Flames. Ryan Miller made 29 saves in the victory.

It was a tremendous start for the trio of Henrik and Daniel Sedin along with Brandon Sutter as they combined for three goals and six points. Daniel led the way with three points.

Jannik Hansen got the first goal of the season as he took a pass from rookie Ben Hutton and hammered home a slapshot at 10:34 of the first period. Hutton earned his first career point in his NHL debut.

Sutter tallied his first as a Canuck to double the lead. With 1:59 to go in the opening frame, Sutter batted a puck out of mid-air and in to make it a 2-0 lead.

The Flames cut into the deficit early in the second period, as Jiri Hudler scored Calgary’s first goal of the season. Vancouver got that goal back though, as Daniel had a Dan Hamhuis shot go off his skate and in with only five seconds remaining in the period.

Alex Burrows and Henrik added goals in the third to round out the scoring.

The teams will play a rematch on Saturday at Rogers Arena in the Canucks’ home opener.
