Printing of Regina Leader-Post to move to Saskatoon in new year

REGINA – The owner of the Regina Leader-Post is shutting down the daily newspaper’s printing operations and moving them to its Saskatoon press room in the new year.

Postmedia says the change won’t affect delivery times to subscribers.

Phyllise Gelsan, vice-president of communications for Postmedia, said the presses in Regina are very old.

“Updating printing equipment is extremely expensive,” she said. “With declining circulation and the cost of updating old iron equipment, it just makes more sense for us to do it this way.”

Sixteen employees will lose their jobs.

“(We’re) pretty disappointed about it,” said Dan Bailey of Unifor, the union that represents the workers. “That’s 16 folks … (who) will be looking for jobs in the new year.

Bailey said the union heard about the decision Tuesday during a meeting with Postmedia. Severance packages or new opportunities are to be negotiated.

Postmedia (TSX:PNC.B, TSX:PNC.A) owns the National Post and several other daily newspapers, including the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, the Edmonton Journal, the Vancouver Sun, the Vancouver Province, the Ottawa Citizen and the Montreal Gazette.
