Conservatives repeat Liberal brothel claim despite no evidence

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Conservatives are repeating claims the Liberals plan to legalize brothels if the party wins the federal election.

This time the claims have been made in a Chinese-language newspaper ad, despite no evidence that is indeed the case.

If you look for a quotation about the Liberal Plan to legalize brothels, good luck finding one, says the party’s Vancouver South candidate Harjit Sajjan, who says he’s disgusted by the claims made by the Conservatives in this ad published in the Ming Pao Chinese-language paper.

“This is unbecoming of any leader,” says Sajjan. “Any party that promotes things like this should really look at themselves in the mirror, and say, ‘what are we really doing here? Do we deserve winning if we’re going to use tactics like this?'”

There is no mention of a plan to legalize brothels in the Liberal Party’s election platform, which is publicly available online.

“It may mislead voters, but I’m confident Canadians can see through this,” says Sajjan. “I’ve knocked on the doors in my riding twice — the conversation we’re hearing on the doorstep is about the future for the children. When you see images like this, in my personal opinion, it’s actually going to backfire on [the Conservatives] on October 19.”

The Conservative Party has yet to respond to our request for a direct quotation from a Liberal candidate during this election or for an excerpt from the Liberal Party’s platform to back up its claims.

Conservative candidate Jason Kenney made a similar statement at a news conference on September 25.

“[Liberal leader Justin Trudeau] wants to force communities to accept brothels,” Kenney said. “We don’t think the values of most Canadians include having to put up with heroin injection sites imposed on their communities against their will, or to have brothels operating in their neighbourhoods against their will.”

Trudeau has never publicly expressed support for the legalization of brothels.
