Canucks fall to the Capitals to remain winless at home

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Alex Ovechkin broke a tie with 4:55 to play in regulation to lift the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena. The Canucks are now 0-2-2 at home this season.

With the teams tied 2-2, Ovechkin fanned on his shot attempt, but it fooled Ryan Miller as the puck went up and over the Canucks goalie before tipping off the bottom of the crossbar on the way into the net. It was his fifth goal of the season.

The Canucks took their first lead of the night in the second period. Jason Chimera had the only goal in the opening frame, as the Capitals led 1-0 until Vrbata tied the game with his first goal of the season. Henrik Sedin had a wrap-around attempt stopped by Braden Holtby but the rebound hit Vrbata’s skate and deflected in.

With 5:59 to play in the second period, Vancouver scored a rare powerplay goal to go ahead 2-1. Henrik banked home his own rebound at the side of the net for his second goal of the season. It was only the second powerplay marker of the year for the Canucks.

Jay Beagle pulled Washington even 5:42 into the third period, which allowed Ovechkin to tally the game-winner.

With the loss, the Canucks are winless in three straight games. They’ll try to get back on track on Saturday when they host the Detroit Red Wings.
