Canadians optimistic and nervous about free trade deal: Poll

OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS 1130) – The Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade deal has Canadians optimistic and nervous at the same time, according to a poll.

Four-in-10 respondents (39 per cent) believe the TPP will have a positive effect on Canada’s economy, while a similar number (42 per cent) told the Angus Reid Institute the TPP will positively affect consumer choices.

Fewer people, about 21 per cent, think it will have a positive impact on employment in their area. One-in-four believe the effect will be negative.

Many details of the agreement between Canada and 11 other Pacific Rim countries have not been released, which could be a factor in three out of ten respondents saying they don’t know what the TPP’s effects might be.

Most of the respondents said the latest free trade deal did not change their feelings about the federal election.
