Former MLA penning a book about Premier Christy Clark

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A woman who is no stranger to politics herself is working on a book about Christy Clark.

Often, books like this are written at the end of a political career. But former Liberal MLA Judi Tyabji says she was motivated to put pen to paper after the premier was blasted for agreeing to close down the Burrard Bridge for International Yoga Day.

“She tried to do a day of yoga and it turned into this huge, huge controversy. I didn’t understand it. In order to understand it, I think we have to go into the background of Christy Clark… Who is she? Why are people reacting to her like this? What does the future hold?”

This isn’t the first time Tyabji has written about a premier. Her last book looked at the reign of Glen Clark and how he was treated by the media.

“I think if you know the full context of who she is, then the yoga episode seems like a hysterical reaction that was completely unnecessary. It’s very similar to Glen Clark. Glen Clark ended up being on the receiving end of attitudes from the public because they were driven by only a certain set of perceptions. That’s what I’m seeing with Christy Clark.

“People have been provided only a very one-dimensional view of who she is and what she’s trying to do for British Columbia. The yoga incident is a perfect example of that where if people actually had the full context, it would have been a very different outcome. What I’d like to provide for people is more of the story. I’m not trying to sell Christy Clark. I’m trying to tell about Christy Clark.”

Tyabji says there is still a lot we don’t know.

“There’s a perception that she hates teachers. Well, her father was a teacher. There’s a perception that she’s indifferent to the poor… I keep hearing that she’s ‘Stephen Harper in a skirt.’ That doesn’t make sense to me,” she tells us.

“At the end of the day, people will make up their minds what they think of her. But let’s at least have a bit more data — some real information,” she adds.

It should be noted that Tyabji’s husband, former Liberal leader Gordon Wilson, was hired by the provincial government to advocate on behalf of the liquefied natural gas industry.

“Christy Clark: Behind the Smile” is due to hit stores in May 2016.
