Virtanen scores his first NHL goal

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Jake Virtanen scored his first NHL goal and Ryan Miller made 27 saves as the Canucks defeated the Flyers 4-1 for their second win on home ice this season.

Bo Horvat, Jannik Hansen and Matt Bartkowski also scored for Vancouver.

Claude Giroux was the lone scorer for Philadelphia. Steve Mason stopped 30 shots as the Flyers dropped their fourth in a row.

The timing of Virtanen scoring his first couldn’t have been better. On Sunday, the Canucks announced that he and fellow 19-year-old rookie forward Jared McCann would be sticking with the club beyond the nine-game mark rather than being returned to junior.

With his team already leading 2-1 in the third period, Virtanen took the puck hard to the net on a 2-on-1 and beat Mason on a backhand. He was all smiles summing things up after the game. “That one’s pretty special, again your first one on home ice in front of the fans. To get it late in the game like that, it’s a pretty big goal so I felt good out there.”

The Canucks will welcome Sidney Crosby and the Penguins to Rogers Arena on Wednesday.
