US customers have shopping advantage: survey

By

TORONTO (NEWS 1130) – Halloween is in the rear-view mirror and we’re now facing the countdown to Christmas, which means the holiday shopping season has already started. And a new survey suggests we have good reason to be jealous of the deals and discounts enjoyed by our friends south of the border.

Kristen Larrea with RetailMeNot.ca, which conducted the survey, calls it a shopping advantage.

“Canadians are feeling like they’re getting the short end of the stick when it comes to being able to save money when they’re shopping this holiday season. There is a perception that the discounts are better in America, that Canadian retailers don’t issue as many discounts.”

Around two-thirds of us (66 per cent) think people in the US, have a clear shopping advantage because of looser regulations around discounts while 72 per cent of Canadians agree that retailers must offer coupons in order to stay competitive in today’s market.

Although overall, we’re not even close to as coupon-literate as Americans.

“Almost one-in-four Canadians have never used a coupon or promo code and when you look at that coupon usage in comparison to American coupon usage, 96 per cent of Americans identify themselves as coupon users. It’s kind of engrained in their culture,” says Larrea.

An additional barrier to Canadians saving more money is the reliance on old methods of coupon discovery and redemption.

Even today’s digital world, 36 per cent of people still rely on print fliers to look for sales, and 62 per cent mostly use coupons in-store versus promo codes for online shopping.

A full 60 per cent of Canadians say using a coupon, makes them feel savvy.
