Canucks fall to the Senators for their fourth loss in five games

OTTAWA, ON (NEWS 1130) – Bobby Ryan and Chris Wideman scored powerplay goals for Ottawa as the Senators beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 on Thursday evening. The Canucks are now 1-2-1 on their seven-game road trip.

Vancouver opened the scoring at 7:48 of the first period with Sven Baertschi’s second goal of the season, and second in the past three games. The Senators tied the game a little over five minutes later on Ryan’s powerplay marker.

Ottawa took its first lead of the night with six minutes to play in the 2nd period. Erik Karlsson was set up by Kyle Turris for his second goal of the season to make it 2-1.

With Henrik Sedin sitting in the penalty box for high-sticking, the Senators got an insurance goal with just 1:55 to play, and it was one that Ryan Miller certainly wants back. Wideman took a long wristshot with no screen, but Miller whiffed on it with his glove, which gave Ottawa a 3-1 advantage.

Alex Edler would tally on a Vancouver powerplay with 23.9 seconds remaining, but the Canucks were not able to get the equalizer past Andrew Hammond, who made 33 saves to record his second win of the season.

Miller feels the third goal cost the team a chance at earning at least a single point.

“I let the guys down with that last one. You’ve always got to have a chance at the end to maybe get it to overtime. It was a pretty critical error on my part.”

Vancouver lost 3-2 to Pittsburgh in its final home game before heading out on the road and has a 1-3-1 record over its last five games. The Canucks will continue the road trip on Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
