Vancouver’s annual leaf collection program kicks off

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you have a bunch of leaves on your property you need to get rid of, you can and crews will actually come pick them up for you. It’s all part of the City of Vancouver’s annual leaf collection program.

All you have to do is rake your leaves, put them in a special bag you have to buy from a store like Canadian Tire, then leave them out and the city will send someone to pick them up.

This is the first of several weekends this is happening.

Mike Zupan, Branch Manager of Sanitation Operations, says they did something similar in October and it was successful. “We did approximately 110,000 tonnes of leaves. On the streets, we’re also encouraging people to ensure they’re not raking leaves into the street which creates a safety issue and it also creates potential flooding.”

The leaves are sent to Delta where steps are taken to re-purpose them. “The leaves we pick up through our program are sent out to the Vancouver landfill in Delta and they’re composted. That’s either used by gardeners or our own Park Board staff will use that for bedding and other applications in the parks.”

This is the first of several weekends the city is doing this.

Leaves that don’t fit in the Green Bin can be placed into biodegradable paper yard waste bags or bins for collection on the following weekends:

  • November 14-15th
  • December 12-13th,
  • January 16-17th, 2016 (will include Christmas tree collection)
