Ex-CFL, NFL star Doug Flutie’s parents die on same day

BOSTON – CFL legend and former star NFL quarterback Doug Flutie and his family have suffered two tragic losses.
Flutie announced in a statement on Facebook that both of his parents died in quick succession Wednesday.
According to Flutie, his father, Dick, was ill and died in the hospital of a heart attack. His mother, Joan, then died of a sudden heart attack less than an hour later.
“They say you can die of a broken heart and I believe it,” Flutie, whose brother Darren is also retired a CFL star, wrote. “My parents were always there for their children, from the days my Dad coached us as kids and my Mom would work the concession stands, through to this morning. The most important part of their 56 years of marriage was providing opportunities to their children. They were incredible parents and Grandparents and my family and I will miss them both.”
