Guelph, Ont., artist wins $25,000 RBC Canadian Painting Competition

VANCOUVER – Patrick Cruz of Guelph, Ont., has won this year’s RBC Canadian Painting Competition.

He took the $25,000 honour on Wednesday for his work entitled “Time allergy.”

The jury praised his “brave approach, maximalist aesthetic, and wild graphic sensibility.”

The competition is part of the RBC Emerging Artists Project, which aims to shine the spotlight on up-and-comers in the field.

Honourable mentions worth $15,000 each went to Hangama Aimiri of Halifax for “Island of Dreams,” and Claire Scherzinger of Toronto for “My Contribution To The Many Paintings Of Pots And Plants.”
