UBC study looks at using light therapy for depression

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – An existing therapy is being used in a new way and it could be good news for people suffering from depression.

We know so-called “light” therapy can help those who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, this time of year.

Now new research from UBC suggests it can benefit those with non-seasonal depression as well.

Psychiatrist Raymond Lam says the findings are quite revolutionary.

“The other studies that have been done have all had limitations, they were too short, they didn’t include a placebo control, so ours was really the first study to look at light therapy by itself as well as in combination with anti-depressants.”

Lam says the research found light therapy provided the most benefit to those who were also taking anti-depressants.
