Vancouver’s Jonathan Auxier wins $30,000 TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award

TORONTO – Jonathan Auxier of Vancouver has won this year’s $30,000 TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award for “The Night Gardener,” which Disney plans to make into a film.

The gothic-style story, published by Puffin, follows two orphaned Irish siblings as they work as servants in a creepy house on a spooky property.

Disney has bought the rights to the story, and Auxier is writing the screenplay.

“The Night Gardener” is Auxier’s followup to “Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes.”

The Pittsburgh-based author was up against four others for the 11th annual prize, which is administered by the Canadian Children’s Book Centre in association with the CBC.

Revered Montreal author and illustrator Marie-Louise Gay won the $5,000 TD Canadian Children’s Literature Fan Choice Award for “Any Questions?” at a Toronto gala on Wednesday.
