Is your car ready for winter driving conditions?

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – With the first flurries of the season in Russ Lacate’s forecast for next week, how prepared are you to navigate slick streets?

Chances are, you have a closet full of gloves, scarves and perhaps some long underwear you may break out in anticipation of the weather.

But it takes a little more effort to get a new set of tires, and at least some people have yet to make the switch.

We caught up with Adam, who plans to do it this weekend. “Just waiting for some money to buy some new tires.”

Lawrence also has yet to get his car ready. “As soon as it snows, I just go and put them on. It’s a little bit of, I guess, not really procrastinator, but that’s a sign to me that winter’s started.”

When it gets to be under seven degrees, you’re not as safe driving with those all-seasons; the rubber gets harder and you don’t get the same amount of traction as you do when it’s warmer.

As of October 1st, you had to have winter tires on your vehicle on highways at higher elevations.

The tread depth on the tires has to be at least 3.5mm, and the tires must show a Mountain Snowflake or Mud and Snow symbol.

If you’re caught with tires that don’t have the right tread depth, you could be fined $109. If you’re caught without snow tires altogether, you could have to cough up $121.
