Portion of northeastern BC lands on UNESCO list

TUMBLER RIDGE (NEWS 1130) – A section of northern BC has landed on an exclusive UNESCO list.

Tumbler Ridge is now a world-recognized Geopark.

There are only 120 Geoparks in the world. Tumbler Ridge is one of two in North America – the other one is in New Brunswick.

A Geopark essentially celebrates how geology and the people living in a given area interact.

Lisa Buckley with the Peace River Palaeontology Research Centre says the region’s inclusion in the club should be no surprise.

“Because of all the palaeontology research going on in the area and with the Dinosaur Discovery Gallery being a very strong geoscience and outreach centre.”

She says their Geopark is being recognized for its efforts in getting people to appreciate the local geology.

“A lot of hiking trails that have been established go into areas that are fantastic in terms of viewing the local geology.”
