The homeless more at risk as the temperature drops

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Next week we could see our first real glimpse of winter. The picturesque snow that could fall in the Lower Mainland is dangerous to everyone living on the street.

The homeless are hit harder by the drop in temperature than anyone else. Jeremy Hunka is with the Union Gospel Mission (UGM), he says this is a crucial time for donations.

“For you and me it’s a matter of being uncomfortable and cold but for people on the streets not having jackets or proper footwear — these things can be potentially life-threatening.”

Hunka says the UGM is holding a fundraiser next week to help with those donations.

Jackets, socks, boots and toques are all in high demand for the low temperatures.

The UGM prepares for the drop in temperature, but they could still use donations and this being the season of giving the homeless could use some help.

“We also have a recovery program, we also have affordable and social housing. So when people come here, they might get a meal, but it can quickly transition into transformation for somebody’s life.”
