Time will ease critics’ concerns about Syrian refugees coming to Canada: activist

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you’re feeling a bit nervous about the federal government’s plan to bring thousands of Syrian refugees into Canada, one local activist says that feeling will pass.

As CEO of Progressive Intercultural Community Services, Charan Gill says making an effort to welcome refugees will make a difference and public opinion will change.

He spent his youth in Hong Kong and India, running from the effects of war and racism and tells us it takes awhile for newcomers to get a handle on living here.

“It takes about two or three years to settle down, to get acquainted. We can help them with employment programs. We can help them settle down via settlement counsellors.”

“Of course, there are bad eggs here and there. We have to be very careful about them. But I personally felt really awful leaving my country, coming to a different place, not knowing the culture,” he tells us, adding those people need to be dealt with.
