Burnaby to appeal ruling over pipeline bylaws

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) — The City of Burnaby is pouring over the details of a decision by a B.C. Supreme Court judge in a battle against the Trans Mountain pipeline.

According to Mayor Derek Corrigan, an appeal is in the works after the judge ruled the National Energy Board has more power than the municipality and its bylaws.

“I’ve received very strong support from our citizens to continue on,” Corrigan said.

Corrigan said Ottawa’s authority is outdated and a trip to Canada’s highest court might be needed.

“You have to get to the Supreme Court of Canada to be able to get the law changed and I think that reflects that desire right across Canada for cities to receive a far better treatment from the federal government in the exercise of its powers.”

The fight against the pipeline stems from environmental concerns.

The Mayor said they have seen pipeline bursts in Burnaby in the past and were less than impressed with it was handled.
