Canada’s homicide rate remains at lowest levels in almost five decades

TORONTO (NEWS 1130) – New figures show Canada’s homicide rate was unchanged last year.

Statistics Canada says that means homicides in both 2013 and 2014 were at their lowest levels since 1966.

In all, police reported 516 killings last year — just four more than a year earlier.

Aboriginals accounted for a disproportionate number of victims — almost one quarter of those reported.

Among provinces, Manitoba had the highest homicide rate in 2014, while Newfoundland and Labrador had the lowest.

Thunder Bay, Ont., had the worst record among cities.
