Public invited to Little Mountain as developer applies for rezoning

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The people of Vancouver, and particularly folks who live near Queen Elizabeth Park, will have another chance to see what’s planned for the Little Mountain area during two upcoming public open houses.

The site could eventually be home to a brand new village with 1,400 condo units.

The plans have been years in the making, and the old buildings have already been demolished, with some units replaced.

Barry Growe with the Community Advocates for Little Mountain is very pleased that the city has bought land from the developer to build a neighbourhood house on the site.

“The city is going to build about 50 residential units on top of the neighbourhood house. That’s great. But the city hasn’t decided if all of them will be subsidized housing. We think it should be.”

The developer is committed to replacing the 234 units of social housing that have been knocked down, but Growe warns it could be a long time before they are rebuilt.

“They are going to build some social housing two to three years from now. The rest of the homes will be integrated into the 18 acres of Little Mountain. That means those units won’t be built for another five to eight years.”

Demolition of the former social housing townhouses began six years ago, resulting in evictions for all but a handful of families who refused to leave.

As a result of their protest, 53 social housing units have been completed and are now occupied.

Holborn Properties, which is the developer, and the City of Vancouver will host open houses to let the public view the plans this Saturday and again next Thursday.
