Low loonie could mean a Black Friday boost for local retailers: DVBIA

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Many Americans are enjoying an unofficial long weekend, thanks to the combination of Black Friday and Thanksgiving.

The Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association says that could mean a lot more US licence plates on this side of the border.

“Downtown has continued to evolve. We’ve got a lot of new retail offerings,” says Charles Gauthier with the DVIBA.

He tells us tourism numbers are looking good, and the current state of the loonie translates to more Americans making their way north.

“[Retailers are] really excited about the upcoming holiday season. They’re very bullish and very excited and believe it’s going to be another record year,” says Gauthier.

“Tourism Vancouver is reporting some great numbers, in terms of visits to our city. I certainly suspect it’s a lot of rubber tire trade that’s coming up here because of the disparity — or lack of parity in the dollar with the US dollar,” he adds.

Gauthier notes the addition of a few big-name stores like Nordstrom are really bringing in the shoppers, and the upcoming holiday season looks good for retailers.
