Local woman returns from helping Syrian refugees in Greece

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There is still a lot to be done in places like Greece as more refugees flee places like Syria.

Iayisha Khan paid out of pocket to travel to Lesbos, one of the major destinations for boats of refugees trying to reach Europe.

Khan describes the conditions in these temporary camps as deplorable, with no clean water or washrooms and people burn plastic to stay warm at night. “This smell just absolutely irritates all of your airways, you can’t breathe, you have to keep a lozenge in your mouth and it’s the most deplorable, disgusting place I have ever been in my entire life and I feel for these people”

Some days a couple boats arrive, as many as 40 on others.

Khan tells me she’s planning another trip soon and hopes others will consider the idea as well.

No clean water, no washrooms, heat or shelter, we’re hearing from a local volunteer back from helping refugees in Greece
