Trending stormy for the first weeks of December

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s time to flip the page on the calendar and get ready for Christmas!

Forecasters are out with their predictions for winter, and those at the Weather Network say we’ll see a warmer, wetter season than usual. But who needs them when we have our own meteorologist to check in with!

As far as Russ Lacate is concerned, we still have El Niño to deal with.

“We’ve identified this for months now as the strongest and broadest on scale on record. But here’s something interesting: measurements indicate that it may have already peaked, which could mean that we’re sort of dealing with the lag effects — the inertia, if you will — of what’s going on with the ocean currents and its impact on our west coast winter here.”

He says we saw November trend slightly colder than average and precipitation turned out to be near normal — which was not expected to happen.

“The earliest indications for December into January are that it will be warmer and wetter than normal. You’d expect that with an El Niño. But I think there’s an awful lot of uncharted territory out there and all that I’ll say with confidence right now is that it’s definitely warming up and trending stormy for the first two weeks of the new month. Beyond that, I think the jury’s still out,” says Russ.

“Looking at the forecast today, we get a hint of it: it’s clouding over, trending wet, and the freezing level is rising. It’ll be 9 degrees on a much rainier afternoon. Then precipitation eases off during the day tomorrow. It looks mostly cloudy with very few showers in the Wednesday forecast and another high of around 9 degrees.”
