Miller shines as the Canucks beat the Rangers

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Alex Edler and Daniel Sedin scored third period goals and Ryan Miller made 32 saves as the Vancouver Canucks knocked off the New York Rangers 2-1 for their second straight victory.

The Rangers were by far the better team through the first two periods as they were outshooting Vancouver 23-14 after 40 minutes, but had nothing to show for it as they couldn’t find a way to beat Miller.

With the Canucks on a powerplay early in the third, Jarrett Stoll was given a delay of game penalty, which put Vancouver up by two men. Just 22 seconds into the 5-on-3 advantage, Daniel set-up Edler at the point and he fired a wrister off the crossbar and in to open the scoring.

New York got back on level terms with a goal on a penalty shot, as Chris Tanev was whistled for closing his hand on the puck in the crease. Defenseman Dan Boyle took the attempt and made a nice forehand deke to beat Miller and tie the game 1-1.

It only took the Canucks 30 seconds to get the lead back though. Edler fired a pass down to Daniel at the left side of the net and he directed it in for his 13th goal of the season. Henrik Sedin drew the second assist on both goals, so he, Daniel and Edler each had two points.

There was a scary moment in the third period as Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis was hit in the face with a rising slapshot and he quickly skated off with blood pouring out of him. Head coach Willie Desjardins is expecting Hamhuis to be out for awhile, but says it could have been worse.

“He lost some teeth, and I assume it probably broke his jaw. His wife was with him when he left and he was fine. He’ll probably spend the night in the hospital but everything’s fine.”

The Canucks have now won back-to-back games following a five-game losing streak. They’ll be on the road for their final six games before Christmas, beginning with a visit to Chicago on Sunday.
