City of Vancouver pumps the brakes on bike lane rumours

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The City of Vancouver says slow down!

Nothing’s been approved when it comes to new separated bike lanes in the city.

City Hall is clarifying what it says is really going on after confusion in the community.

There have been concerns from business groups including Commercial Drive’s after reports several new bike lanes had been approved.

Lon LaClaire, acting director of transportation for Vancouver, says the only thing approved was a map of a five-year-plan showing where the city wants to build bike lanes, and a pilot project to allow skateboards and scooters in them.

“The actual reason for doing the five-year outlook was very much about no surprises. It was because the business community saw us working on projects, and they felt that they wanted more like a five-year time horizon so they could anticipate any change.”

When it comes to new bike lanes, LaClaire says there will be more consultation in the new year.
