Canucks score in overtime to beat the Oilers

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Jannik Hansen scored his second goal of the game in overtime as the Vancouver Canucks opened their seven-game homestand with a 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

Mark Letestu got the visitors on the board first, as he used Alex Edler as a screen while snapping a shot past Jacob Markstrom 12:55 into the first period. Markstrom was making his second consecutive start, as Ryan Miller remains day-to-day with an injury.

The Canucks’ top line pulled them even 3:37 into the second period. Henrik Sedin feathered a perfect saucer-pass onto the stick of Jannik Hansen, who buried his 11th goal of the season. Daniel Sedin also earned an assist on the goal.

Hansen had to leave the game briefly late in the third period for repairs after he was cut on the head from a collision with the crossbar. He returned to the game to fire home the game-winner as he beat Cam Talbot with a slapshot coming down the right side. It was the first overtime goal for the Canucks this season.

Markstrom stood out for the Canucks, as he made 32 saves for the win. It’s the first time he has won back-to-back games since being acquired by Vancouver.

The Canucks were also playing without Alex Burrows, Chris Higgins and Chris Tanev due to injuries. Burrows was announced as a late scratch with an upper-body injury and is listed as day-to-day.

Vancouver was playing the first game of a seven-game homestand, which is its longest of the season. Up next is a visit from the Los Angeles Kings on Monday.
