Smiths Falls golfer Brooke Henderson named Canadian Press female athlete of year

TORONTO (NEWS 1130) – Golfer Brooke Henderson proved her decision to turn pro a year ago was a good one.

The 18-year-old from Smiths Falls, Ont., became the first Canadian to win on the LPGA Tour since 2001 and rocketed to No. 18 in the world rankings this year.

She has capped her impressive season by winning the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award as the The Canadian Press female athlete of the year.

Henderson picked up 37 per cent of the vote in the annual survey of editors and broadcasters from across the country.

She won the Cambia Portland Classic last August by a whopping eight shots and finished tied for fifth at two major events.

Soccer player Kadeisha Buchanan was well back in second place in the voting. Tennis player Eugenie Bouchard won the award the last two years.
