Flight agreements could be a boost for YVR: province

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There will likely be more flights in and out of YVR to China in the new year after the signing of a new deal between Canada and that country in recent weeks.

This also comes as we sign a new deal with Australia.

In combination, our airport could see a significant increase in traffic in the months ahead.

“Air access and increased direct flights in and out of Vancouver are incredibly important to our economy,” says Jobs and Tourism Minister Shirley Bond. “The ability for people to access British Columbia and move on to the rest of the country is very important. We’re very pleased to see additional flights.”

Bond is enthusiastic, suggesting airlines and YVR will need to hire more staff in the coming months.

“The most direct jobs of course are at YVR,” says Bond. “Then all of the related services — to make sure the airline gets in on time, and all the baggage — all the things that are related to one of those flights.”

The deal with China gives Canadian airlines access to six additional airports in that country, while the agreement with Australia doubles existing limits on travellers going between the two countries each week.

It’s not clear whether this will make flying cheaper, but there will almost certainly be more choice in terms of destinations.
