Vancouver’s Catfe temporarily closed, needs more cats

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Vancouver’s first cat cafe is closing up for a few days because they just can’t keep enough of the felines around.

Michelle Furbacher, president of Catfe, says some cats are barely there more than a day before a customer falls in love and want to adopt them.

“We even got a couple emergency shipments of a couple cats at a time and then people would come in and meet them and wanted to adopt them the next day,” Furbacher tells us.

“We had just a crazy spree of adoptions that happened in the first couple weeks since we opened.”

It’s been an adoption frenzy since the shop opened three weeks ago.

It’s a great problem to have for the lounge, which has partnered with the SPCA.

“We’ve stumbled upon an adoption model that really works.”

Furbacher said they plan to re-open Friday after a Thursday shipment was delayed due to poor road conditions north of Vancouver.

She said the optimal number of cats would be between eight and 12. “The most we had was eight in the first week we opened, but they just all got adopted out so quickly.”

Furbacher hopes people will keep in mind that just because there is a shortage at the Catfe, it doesn’t mean there is a shortage in the Lower Mainland. Many shelters have a high number of cats available for adoption.
