Horvat carries the Canucks past the Hurricanes

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Bo Horvat scored twice in the third period, including the game-winner with 1:06 to play, as the Vancouver Canucks beat Eddie Lack and the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2.

Lack was playing his first game back in Vancouver after being traded by the Canucks in the summer. He made just 18 saves in the loss.

Horvat has now scored three times in two games after starting the season with just two goals in his first 39 games.

After a goalless first period, the Hurricanes got on the board first with a shorthanded goal. Eric Staal forced a turnover at the Carolina blueline and then set up John-Michael Liles, who beat Jacob Markstrom with a shot glove-side that the Canucks’ goalie should have had.

Vancouver tied the game before the second period was up. Adam Cracknell sent Sven Baertschi in on a breakaway and he fired one past Lack for his sixth goal of the season. Baertschi was making his return to the line-up after missing two games with a neck injury.

The Canucks took their first lead of the night 7:15 into the third period. Horvat drove down the left side and made a power move to the net before sliding the puck past Lack. Matt Bartkowski and Alex Biega picked up the assists.

With eight minutes remaining, the Hurricanes tied it up. Noah Hanifin had his stick break on his shot attempt from the point, but the puck conveniently slid to Jordan Staal in the slot, who turned and fired top-corner to make it 2-2.

Horvat’s second goal of the night came on the powerplay and it was the difference. Baertschi centred to Horvat in the slot and he one-timed it up and over Lack for the game-winner. The assist gave Baertschi a two-point game.

Markstrom turned aside 26 shots to record his fifth win of the season. The Canucks continue their homestand on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
