New Compass Cards make it tough to avoid airport surcharge

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – Some of us will end up paying more to ride the Canada Line from the airport once all the paper fare savers are gone. Many riders have been using them to avoid paying the airport surcharge.

People riding the Canada Line from the airport are supposed to be paying five dollars extra as a way to fund the construction of the link to YVR. You can avoid the extra charge by pre-buying a fare saver to use instead of buying the fare at the YVR station kiosks.

TransLink will stop selling fare savers at the end of the month.

Jennifer Morland with TransLink says the fee for the special stop is like a toll.

“The YVR add fare has been in place since the Canada Line opened and it’s been there to ensure that the customers who are benefitting from that extension pay for it.”

The five bucks will be automatically taken from your account if you pay using a reloadable Compass Card. Monthly, program and day passes are exempt from the fee.
