North Vancouver man believed to be victim of murder-suicide in New York state

GENESEO, NEW YORK – It’s looking as if 24-year-old Matthew Hutchinson, a former hockey star on the North Shore who went on to play for the Chilliwack Chiefs, was the victim of a double murder-suicide in New York State this weekend, in which a fellow State University of New York student was also killed.

Police believe Colin Kingston is responsible.

He was a former student of the same university and had been dating Kelsey Annese, the other victim in the attack, before their recent breakup.

It is believed Kingston then killed himself after the attacks.

Police have recovered a knife they believe was used in the attacks.

Local hockey community grieves:

The local hockey community is remembering Hutchinson as a hard-working player who always looked to bring a smile off the ice.

Barry Douglas works for the Chilliwack Chiefs and says Hutchinson embraced the club’s community outreach work during his time with the club.

“Helping kids at their hockey practices, playing floor hockey or playing road hockey,” says Douglas. “Whatever was required, he’d do it with a smile on his face. He would be one of those guys, the one to be a leader — the first to go and chat with the fans, the volunteers, and not wait for them to come to him.”

Douglas says he also had a good sense of humour.

“One of the Christmas parties, Matthew was the guy who dressed as Santa when the players had their gift exchange,” says Douglas. “He was that kind of guy, where he really wanted to make people smile.”

Hutchinson is also being remembered for his firefighting.

He fought wildfires here in BC, before signing up as a volunteer firefighter in New York State.
