Twenty horses saved from barn fire in Delta

DELTA (NEWS 1130) – No people or animals are hurt after a massive barn fire in Delta overnight.

Twenty horses were saved from the flames by quick-thinking owners.

The fire at Loranda Stables and Kitty Cottage on 28th Avenue off Highway 17 broke out around midnight, with orange flames shooting into the sky.

Bob Culvert owns one of the horses that was inside and says he heard about the fire on the radio about 4 a.m.

“I just got up and came over immediately. The fire trucks were still here, but it was obvious that everything was going to be gone. Luckily, they got the horses out the back. My horse and another horse just ran straight back out and into the back field.”

Today, a relieved Culvert showed CityNews a picture of his horse outside the now-charred barn.

“Dixie and her buddy, Nugget — that was taken a couple of days ago in those stalls… now, those stalls are just totally destroyed.”

He says the owners reacted quickly, with one of them running out in her bare feet to free the animals.

Crews are looking into how it started but say the fire doesn’t look like it’s suspicious.
