VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A report expected today from BC’s privacy commissioner could have major implications on the provincial government.
It has to do with a snafu in the education ministry.
In September of last year, an investigation was launched by Privacy Commissioner Elizabeth Denham when it was learned a portable hard drive with the personal information of nearly 3.5 million kids and teachers in BC and Yukon went missing.
At the time, it was dubbed a major data breach, but the province downplayed the risk.
The hard drive included survey results from teachers on their retirement plans, as well as more than 9,000 personal education numbers of children in the care of the province before the 2006-07 school year.
Attached to those numbers is information such as health and behaviour issues and supervision status.
The report will look into whether the Ministry of Education took reasonable measures to secure the device.
