Many Canadians staying north of the line due to low loonie

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Are you making fewer trips across the border to pick up groceries, or, cutting out vacations to the US because of our low dollar?

It seems many of us are setting our sights elsewhere to help soften the blow to our wallets.

Almost half of Canadians plan to not only cut back on travel to the states, but also hold back on runs across the line for groceries or other things, according to new numbers from Angus Reid.

“What you’re also finding is — particularly, here in Metro Vancouver — people are saying that they’re also really going to be swearing off or dialling back the amount of same-day cross-border shopping trips they’ll make,” says Shachi Kurl with the pollster.

She adds an even larger number are noticing their grocery bills at home going higher.

“All of that is driving or playing into peoples’ overall view of whether or not the dollar has potential to have a negative or positive impact, not just on their own household finances, but on the economy as a whole.”

Kurl says a majority of Canadians think a low dollar is going to be bad for the national economy and for that of their province.
