People in Vancouver’s Point Grey worried they still aren’t getting a say in the sale of the Jericho lands

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – People living on Vancouver’s west side are worried about what could happen if the provincial government doesn’t give them a say on the future of the Jericho lands.

There’s been confusion around the future of the property in Point Grey.

NDP MLA David Eby says it’s a tough topic, as the land — which has a First Nations title claim — already houses a francophone school and a community centre, and is home to salmon streams.

“During the budget estimates process, I’ll have a chance to ask questions of the minister responsible for property sales,” says Eby.

He says the minister responsible for property sales hasn’t indicated when a consultation process could begin.

Half of the land is owned by the province. The Department of National Defence is expected to decommission the other half by 2017.

“Will the provincial government consult with the community about the kind of development that we’d like to see here? Or will they simply sell it to the highest bidder and that’s that?” wonders Eby.

“Our hope is that consultation will take place,” he adds. “On the federal side, they’ve been much clearer. They’re going to do two rounds of full community consultation before even going to the city.”
