Canucks go winless on their three-game homestand

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Emerson Etem tallied his first goal of the season but Jonas Hiller made 34 saves to lead the Calgary Flames past the Vancouver Canucks 4-1. The Canucks have lost four straight games and went 0-2-1 on their three-game homestand.

The Flames opened the scoring on a pretty passing play 6:25 into the second period. T.J. Brodie came down the right side and feathered a backhand pass to the far post, where Michael Frolik was there to tap home his ninth goal of the season.

Calgary thought it had added to the lead with just under 12 minutes to play in the third period. Michael Ferland snapped a shot off the post before Blair Jones put the puck in behind Ryan Miller, but the goal was quickly waved off. After the puck hit the post, Ferland batted it out of the air to Jones, so the hand pass stopped the play.

With just under five minutes to play, the Flames did get the 2-0 goal, and this time it counted. Jiri Hudler centred the puck from behind the net and Sean Monahan one-timed it past Miller for his 16th goal. Mikael Backlund added to the lead with an empty-net goal with 1:59 remaining, but the scoring wasn’t done yet.

The Canucks spoiled Hiller’s shutout bid with 1:34 left in regulation. Etem scored on a bang-bang play for his first goal as a member of the Canucks. Alex Burrows got the assist.

Vancouver pulled the goalie again, and the Flames added another goal into the empty-net. Sam Bennett put it in.

Dan Hamhuis made his return for the Canucks after missing two months with facial fractures. He had 18:51 of ice time and registered three shots on goal with a -1 rating.

The Canucks will now venture out for a pair of mid-week games on the road. They visit Colorado on Tuesday and Arizona on Wednesday.
