Are we the worst generation of parents ever?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s a day designed to give working people some time off to spend with their loved ones.

But as we mark Family Day here in BC, there are suggestions the current crop of moms and dads isn’t doing the greatest job raising their kids.

A recent article from our friends at Today’s Parent Magazine asks: “Are we the worst generation of parents ever?”

It argues previous generations were too tough on kids, letting them learn from mistakes.

And while some call it harsh, there’s been a complete reversal over the years says the magazine’s editor Sasha Emmons.

Today’s parents are too protective, shielding kids from even the slightest hint of failure.

“They’re never really allowed to experience failure. They’re never really shown that you have the confidence in them to be a bit more independent and to make decisions for themselves. And really, once they get into adulthood, it can cripple them,” says Emmons.

And as the first millennials start to raise their kids, today’s parents have become too quick to shelter them from any sort of failure.

“A lot of kids don’t have coping skills. Their parents have taken care of so many things for them themselves,” says Emmons.

She says parents should strike a balance, being supportive of their kids but, not so much that they’re unable to accept any mistakes they’ll inevitably make over the course of their lives.
