VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Five months after the image of little Alan Kurdi lying face-down on a beach in Turkey shocked the world into taking action on the Syrian refugee crisis, two men are now on trial in connection with his death.
Alan’s father is also being tried. It isn’t clear exactly what charges he’s facing. He’s being tried in absentia.
Two Syrian men are on trial in the Aegean resort of Bodrum, accused of human smuggling and of causing Alan’s and four other migrants’ deaths though deliberate negligence.
If they are found guilty, they could each spend up to 3.5 decades behind bars.
Thousands of migrants lost their lives last year crossing the Mediterranean, hoping for better lives.
NATO is sending three ships to the Aegean Sea to keep track of the refugee crisis.
