Coroner’s inquest continues into fatal police shooting of man at Starlight Casino

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Evidence will continue today and early next week as a coroner’s jury examines what led to the fatal police shooting of a 48-year-old Metro Vancouver man.

Mehrdad Bayrami was shot in November 2012, ending a five-hour armed standoff with police outside a New Westminster casino.

It began when casino staff saw a man using a handgun to threaten a woman and, yesterday, the jury heard that, just before he died, Bayrami began pacing — as one officer said he appeared to mutter the words “Shoot me, shoot me. Do it, do it.”

Delta Police Constable Jordan MacWilliams, who fired the shot that killed Bayrami, says he pulled the trigger when Bayrami pointed his weapon at police.
