Dennis Oland seeks bail today pending appeal of second-degree murder conviction

FREDERICTON – Just a day after Dennis Oland was sentenced for the second-degree murder of his father, lawyers will be back in court today seeking to have him released on bail pending an appeal of his conviction.

The notice of appeal filed last month asks the court to allow the appeal, quash the conviction, and direct a verdict of acquittal or order a new trial.

The document alleges the trial judge made multiple errors in his instructions to the jury.

In an affidavit filed with the court, Oland says he would continue to work as a director of his father’s companies and live at home with his wife, Lisa, if granted bail.

Both his mother and uncle say they have unencumbered assets of at least $1 million each and are prepared to provide whatever level of bail the court may set.

The bail hearing is being heard in the Court of Appeal in Fredericton.

Oland was sentenced Thursday to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years for the murder of his father, Richard Oland, in July 2011.
