Heart and Sole shoe exchange helps those on DTES

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As rain is forecast to drench Vancouver for the next week, the Union Gospel Mission is making plans for a timely event.

The charity, on the city’s Downtown Eastside, holds its annual Heart and Sole shoe exchange today.

Vancouver-based SHOES.COM is teaming up with the Union Gospel Mission to hand out as many as 250 pairs of shoes and socks to residents whose footwear no longer keeps them dry or warm during their long hours on the street.

Mission spokesman Matt Hislop says worn and tattered shoes in wet conditions lead to chronic foot problems that often develop into more serious medical problems.
