Taseko sues feds over mine rejection

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A Vancouver-based mining company is suing the federal government for turning down its proposed copper-and-gold mine in BC.

Taseko Mines has gone to BC Supreme Court seeking damages for the denial of its “New Prosperity” project in the Cariboo region two years ago. It claims the government “failed to meet the legal duties that were owed to Taseko.”

The amount of damages is not specified but the suit says “Taseko has spent in excess of $130 million to date developing the project.” It also seeks punitive damages. Taseko lost a defamation suit against environmental activists last month, the judge calling it an “economic threat.”
