BC tourism revenue has increased 38 per cent over the last 10 years

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A new study is shedding some light on the province’s booming tourism industry and it’s growth over the past decade.

The boom is being linked to more direct flights to BC and a new marketing strategy.

The study by BC Stats looked at growth between 2004 and 2014 and reveals a 38-per cent increase in tourism revenue over 10 years.

Minister of Tourism Shirley Bond says more than 125,000 people are employed in the sector, which has become a key part of the economy.

“We look at things like GDP growth, we’ve seen significant even year over year, but what’s most important is that British Columbia today has a very strong, growing and diversified economy.”

There are more than 19,000 tourism-related companies in British Columbia and 93-per cent of those are small businesses.

The head of Destination BC says global tourism is forecast to double over the next 20 years, so the province is well positioned for even more growth.
