Most people in Surrey support LRT: survey

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – From attracting new businesses to improving the local economy, a new survey from Ipsos Canada suggests there are plenty of reasons people in Surrey are getting on board with plans for a new light rail line.

Things like better transportation, connection to other cities, more jobs, improved tourism and an overall more vibrant city highlight the list for more than three quarters of people polled.

We spoke with one early-morning commuter from Surrey who is among the eight in 10 people who support building the new line.

He says less traffic is the main reason he’s behind the proposal. “Because Surrey is terrible for traffic.”

“And more people off the roads… quieter and safer.”

Those under 55 were 10 per cent more likely to support the project than those over that same age. Six in 10 say they would definitely use the new line if and when it’s completed.

According to the poll, fewer than 20 per cent of people are against LRT.

The poll was conducted on behalf of the City of Surrey.
