Drones are the focus of a fair this weekend in Burnaby

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Drones have become increasingly popular over the past couple of years, and if you’ve wanted to learn more about them, you have a chance this weekend.

There’s a fair about the unmanned flying machines happening at BCIT’s Burnaby campus to educate and celebrate the gadgets.

It’s about showing there are a lot of amazing things the technology can do, according to organizer, Steve Watts.

He says safety and awareness will also be big parts of it. “Basically we want to tell people that drones are aircraft and so when you’re flying an aircraft, there are a lot of rules and regulations that you need to follow, including knowing where to fly and where not to fly.”

Watts adds sales among the average person have exploded. “To show people that there’s a lot of amazing things that this technology can do and potentially can do in the future, but it’s also about safety and awareness when flying drones.”

About 20 vendors will be at the fair, as well as several experts who will be speaking on topics like wildlife mapping, film and TV and privacy.

The event runs from noon to 6 p.m.
